Vic's Article: Chance to Challenge Control

Oh man, the Vic-ster was really at it today. The guy is a huge cry-baby when it comes to the Indianapolis Colts. Even though the Colts are the defending Super Bowl champions and have won the AFC South 4 consecutive seasons, Ketchum seems to think the team is constantly overrated, soft, not deserving of their constant dominance over his Jags. Its really quite sad.

Check out Ketchum's piece today http://www.jaguars.com/news/article.aspx?id=6552

Particularly I'm going to focus on "Vic's 10 Things list" within the above linked article. There are some real gems in there.

According to Vic here are the things the Jaguars have to do to beat the Colts.

2. Pick the right times—To blitz Manning. You can’t make a steady diet of it or you’ll get burned. Manning, however, may be without Marvin Harrison again and that means the Jaguars should be able to assign double-coverage to Reggie Wayne. Go ahead, blitz him.

FACT: Ask Jim Johnson of the Eagles how this worked out for him last year and in 2002. The Teams that have had success blitzing Manning are 3-4 defenses where they had success disguising their linebacker blitzes. Do you watch football, Vic? The Jags operate a Base 4-3 predicated on their big DTs eating space and taking on blocks so that their LBs can use their athleticism to make plays. I can't think of any 4-3 defense that has had success blitzing Manning. In fact, most are not dumb enough to even try.

Vic, the Jags pressure this week is going to have to come off the ends. Particularly from Paul Spicer, who looks to have a match-up advantage on his side. Please bring us better insight next time.

5. Start fast—It’ll help reduce the natural crowd noise.

FACT: Natural Crowd Noise? This is so laughable. Got Evidence? Hey Vic, at least the Colts sell out their games. Seriously, last week, the Jaguars had an important home game against the Buffalo Bills and failed to sell it out before the blackout deadline. How many seats will the Jags cover next year? Do you really need that top tier? Cover the whole 400 section.

6. Be physical—It worked last year.

FACT: Last year? You still living in the past? This Colts Defense is a lot different personnel wise than last year. To name a few key differences. Bob Sanders is healthy and playing, the corner combo is a lot more physical than last years unit, and the new linebackers (Freddie and Hagler or even Boiman) just love to fly around and lay the wood to respective ball carriers.

I'm curious if anyone who makes this "soft" argument against the Colts have watched a Colts game since last season's playoffs. Moreover, who was the more physical team in Week 9 when the Colts thumped you 29-7 in your stadium??

7. Block Bob Sanders—A 5-8 guy should not be permitted to have his way.

FACT: This just isn't any 5-8 player. Its Bob Sanders. How tall are you? Bob is like the Chuck Norris of the NFL

9. Leave your CDs at home—The Colts have lots of them.

FACT: You're a HACK. And you've already made this joke

Once again the "purveyors" of truth have messed up. If you're going to rant about somebody while claiming to have the facts the least you can do is get the person's name correct. It is Ketchman no Ketchum. By the way if you Indianapolis pansies are having trouble with the meaning of the big word in the first sentence, it means someone who promulgates something; like lies. By the way who is the one living in the past? You blast Vic for mentioning Jax Jags beat you before, then you say the Colts are gonna continue to beat the Jags based on your perceptions of their performances....in the PAST. Get a clue. Both teams have changed in the offseason and there is no way to tell how good each team is until they play.

First of all, you have got to chill out. The article is (a) designed for Jags fans, and (b) a commentary. Its not fact, its not the Jags game plan, its what Vic thinks is important. Second, I think a lot of your arguments are pretty flawed.

1) Vic said, clearly, pick the right times to blitz, and he's right. Every defense has to mix it up a bit to avoid being predictable. Second, the Jags needed to blitz to apply pressure. Contrary to what you say, Paul Spicer is not a great edge rusher; he's not going to consistently apply pressure, so the Jags need to blitz to get the pressure necessary. Just because it won't work all the time, doesn't mean you shouldn't blitz.

2) Vic is right; it is very loud in the dome. Whether or not its natural, its loud, and starting fast will quiet it. What he said is true. Your argument was flawed in every way; you don't address the issue, you attack the person (or team) presenting it. Our blackout situation has nothing to do with crowd noise in Indy. That is a classic fallacy of logic and argument.

3) You're making a big assumption here. Vic said nothing about the Colts being soft. He said physicality worked last year and that it should work again now. Given that the Jags are a running/defense team, being physical is pretty important, so I'd say Vic is right. Again, stop making assumptions. Also, you say Vic shouldn't live in the past, but you said the Jags shouldn't blitz because it didn't work for Jim Johnson in 2002. A little inconsistent, are we?

Lastly, stop saying "FACT:". You are clearly asserting and arguing, albeit poorly, your opinion. Simply using the word "FACT:" is a poor attempt to lend credibility to your opinion, another poor choice of argumentative logic. Now, let Vic write about his opinion and stop reading so much into what he says.

I read Vic as a crusty ol dog who loves to push buttons. In case you haven't noticed, that's what damn near everyone is doing on social media.
